The Vietnam vet who participated in the 1985 arms scandal signs this
photograph of himself at a microphone with an inscription to a fan
Inscribed photograph signed: "To Irene,/All the best/Oliver
North" in gold felt. 8x10. Oliver North (b. 1943) is a former US
Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel infamous for his involvement in the
1980's Iran-Contra affair. Coming from a decorated history as soldier
during the Vietnam War (which includes a Silver Star, Bronze Star, and two
Purple Hearts), North became involved in the arms scandal in 1985 when
working as a military aide to the United States National Security Council, and
was the one to originally propose that part of the profits from the sold arms
would be diverted to the Contras to aid their rebellion against the
Sandinista government. However, it was North's destruction of pertinent legal
documents that most implicated North, which ultimately led to his conviction
of illegal gratuity, obstruction of a congressional inquiry, and destruction of
documents. However, his ruling was overturned due to being granted
immunity. After being fired from his position, North pursued a career in
politics that was unsuccessful, but did write a number of books detailing his
life and career and currently hosts his own series, War Stories with
Oliver North (2001). Corners rounded and lightly creased. Otherwise,
fine condition.
