Autograph Letter Signed: “Paul Conger” in black ink. 8½x11. One page. Written on William
W. Stanhope letterhead. No place. Date: September 14, 1990. In part: “Dear Col. Conger:
Could you please answer a question for me? Of all the many combat situations that you were in,
which one is the most vivid in your mind, and why? I imagine that this question has been asked of
you many times before, but I would love to have an answer for my own curiosity. Thank you for
taking some of your valuable time to assist me, I remain. Respectfully, Will W. Stanhope/ Dear
William: Pleasure to have guys like you show interest in WW II. I flew three years combat against
the German fighters and have many memories. When we came back from a mission...”. Paul A.
Conger (1918-1994) was a World War II ace that is credited with eleven victories flying with
the 56th Fighter Group USAF. When the war ended, he helped to reactivate the 56th Fighter
Group at Selfridge Fiel, Michigan and on November 1946 he left active duty and joined the
Air Force Reserve. He remained in the Air Force Reserve, serving with Continental Air
Command in Los Angeles until his retirement on February 5, 1958. Lightly toned and worn.
