DOOLITTLE'S RAIDERS: ROBERT L. HITE
The World War II aviator signs on this 3x1½ card, adding his plane number and date for the offical raid also known as the "Tokyo Raid"
Signature: "Robert L Hite/Lt Col USAF (Ret)/Plane #16 off 'USS Carrier Hornet/4-18-'42", 3x1½. On April 18, 1942, 80 men took off in 16 B-25 Mitchell bombers from the U.S.S. Hornet for a daring raid over Japan. Led by James "Jimmy" Doolittle, the raid, which marked the first time fully loaded bombers took off from an aircraft carrier, was in retaliation for Japan's surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. "Doolittle's Raiders" hit targets in Tokyo, Yokohama and other cities and scored a huge victory for U.S. morale at a time when Japan's position in the Pacific seemed impregnable. Second Lieutenant Robert L. Hite (1920-2015) was the Co-Pilot of plane #16, the last to leave the aircraft carrier. After Hite's plane bombed the city of Nagoya, all five members of its crew were captured. Two were executed; Hite and two others were imprisoned for three and a half years. During his ordeal, Hite's weight dropped to 80 pounds. Slightly soiled. Ink note on verso (no show through). Fine condition.
