VIRGIL "GUS" GRISSOM. Check signed: "Virgil I. Grissom", 6¼x2¾. Denbigh, Virginia, 1959 October 31. Unnumbered check, drawn on the account of Captain Virgil Grissom and Betty Grissom at the National Bank of Fort Sam Houston of San Antonio, Texas, payable to Giant Food for $50.00, completely filled out by Gus Grissom. On July 21, 1961, Grissom became the second American astronaut in space aboard Project Mercury's Liberty Bell 7. He returned to space aboard Gemini 3 on March 23, 1965, the first manned Gemini flight, with astronaut John Young, orbiting the Earth three times. Grissom was chosen, with Edward H. White II and Roger B. Chaffee, for the first manned Apollo mission in 1967. On January 27, 1967, during a routine training exercise, a fire in the command module of Apollo 1 killed all three astronauts. When this check was signed the first group of astronauts including Grissom, selected in April 1959, were in training. The first live passenger on a Mercury test vehicle, Sam the monkey, was launched on December 4, 1959. Cancellation holes, slightly affecting "V" of "Virgil". Bank stamps on verso show through faintly. Otherwise, fine condition.
