Denton” in blue ink on a 6½x3½ envelope. First Day Cover honoring Christmas 1963. Postmarked Santa Claus, Indiana, November 1, 1963. Five cent stamp affixed. FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Lt. Col. Winfield K. Denton (1896-1971) spent a large portion of his life serving his country, first by enlisting in the military during WWI and later as an elected U.S. Congressman. After beginning his political career with the Indiana state legislature from 1937-1942, he rejoined the United States Army to serve in WWII. He was discharged as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1945. From 1949-1966, Denton served in the United States Congress for eight terms, only failing to be reelected to the Eighty-third legislative body from 1953-1955. Toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
