RICHARD E. "DICK" STAMBOOK The U.S. Navy ace who fought in World War II signs this commemorative cover paying homage to the 50th anniversary of the U.S. airborne forces Commemorative Envelope signed: "Dick Stambook", in black ink, 6½x3¾. Commemorative envelope celebrating the 50th anniversary of the U.S. airborne forces. Postmarked Washington, D.C., July 5, 1990, 30¢stamp affixed. Richard E. "Dick" Stambook (1921-2000) earned ace status while flying with VF-27 from the U.S. aircraft carrier Princeton off the Philippines from June to October 1944, piloting an F6F Hellcat fighter. He earned double ace status with 10 aerial victories (some sources credit him with 11). His streak ended when the Princeton was sunk at the Battle of Leyte Gulf, and Stambook was lucky to swim away with his life. He spent the rest of his time in the military as a flight instructor, and then went on to fly for TWA for 24 years. Corners slightly worn. Faint pencil marking on left margin. Slightly toned. Small stain under 'Dick'. Soiled on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
