Special Cover signed: "Fitz Fulton", "Don
Mallick" and "Vic Horton", 6½x3¾. Special Cover for
the "Solid Booster Parachute Drop Flight Test No. 1, DTV No. 1", 13-cent 13-star
flag/Independence Hall stamp affixed, postmarked Edwards, CA, June 10,
1977. At upper left, cachet pictures an "Artist Sketch of Eventual Sea Drop
in 1979". A sketch of the plane is captioned: "B-52 Carries Recoverable
Solid Booster Rocket Aloft In Preparation For Parachute Drop Tests, Scaled Down
Model of Shuttle Booster (Drop Test Vehicle) DTV'. There is also a sketch of
Edwards AFB and sketches of the mission's pilots, Fulton & Mallick.
DON MALLICK (b. 1930) was a NASA research pilot at the Dryden Flight
Research Center from 1963-1981, later becoming Deputy Chief of the Dryden
Aircraft Operations Division. Chief Pilot from 1967, he was involved
in the YF-12 and XB-70 research programs, and in the mid-1960s, he was
chief project pilot for NASA's Lunar Landing Research Vehicle (LLRV).
FITZHUGH L. "FITZ" FULTON (1925-2015) was a civilian research
pilot at the Dryden Flight Research Center from 1961-1986. A veteran of 23
years as a U.S. Air Force pilot, he was the project pilot on all early tests
of the 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA), which launched the space shuttle
prototype Enterprise, and the Approach and Landing Tests (ALT) at Dryden in
1977. Fulton was also the project pilot for NASA's B-52 launch aircraft
(as pictured here). VIC HORTON was a Flight Engineer for NASA's
research leading up to the launch of the space shuttle, Enterprise.
