The Army Chief of Staff and U.S. Senator sign their names on respective sides, dated 1899. Extremely rare!
Signature: "Adna R. Chaffee/Maj Genl Vols/April 13th 1899", and on verso: "A.S. Clay,/Ga./Feby 24, 1899". 1p, 6¼x4. ADNA R. CHAFFEE (1842-1914), an officer in the United States Army, served in several wars, beginning with his involvement in the Civil War as a Union Army soldier. He fought in several battles, being brevetted Captain for his involvement in the Battle of Dinwiddie Court House. His appointment was followed by a grueling thirty years in the Indian Wars, the Spanish American War, and finally the Boxer Rebellion of 1900, where he commanded troops in Peking, China. Upon returning home, Chaffee was the Army Chief of Staff (1904-1906). He retired in 1906 at his own request, and lived the rest of his life in Los Angeles. ALEXANDER S. CLAY (1853-1897) served as a Democrat in the United States Senate from 1897 until his death in 1910. He was Chairman of the Senate Committee on Revolutionary Claims in the 59th Congress. Lightly soiled. Heavily toned. Corners and edges slightly worn and creased. Light creases throughout. Otherwise, fine condition.
