ENNIS C. WHITEHEAD
Signed typed letter in retirement discussing his poor health
Typed Letter signed: "Ennis C. Whitehead", 1 page, 7¼x10½. Newton, Kansas, 1962 May 8. On personal letterhead to "Dear Russ". In full: "Thanks for the picture of your son. He is a handsome lad. I expected him to be because he has a beautiful Mother. The picture reached me while I was in the AF Chest Center - USAF Hospital Scott - at Scott AFB; Illinois. Emphysema was giving me such a hard time that I had to go to a hospital and try and get some relief. Returned home three days ago and must stay right here until after July 4th and undergo a continuation of the treatment which they gave me at the hospital and trained me to do on my own. (With some $550 worth of power nebulizer equipment which I bought). Thanks again for the picture and with my very best to Claire, the son, and yourself, I am Sincerely". Ennis Clement Whitehead (1895-1964) was an army test pilot during World War I. In the interwar years, he participated in General Billy Mitchell's tests which demonstrated the effectiveness of aircraft against surface ships. In 1931 he set a new speed record on a Miami to Panama flight. Acclaimed for his skill at aerial tactics, he rose during World War II to command of the Fifth Air Force and then the Far East Air Forces. He retired in 1951 as a Lieutenant General commanding the US Air Defense Command. Fold creases not near signature. Ink notes (unknown hand) on verso (light show-through). Otherwise, fine condition.
