GEORGY T. BEREGOVOY
Color Russian postcard of cosmonaut Georgy T. Beregovoy, with postal stamp honoring him affixed. Signed on both postcard and stamp. Signatures of early cosmonauts are extremely rare!
Picture post card signed: "Beregovoy" in Russian on postcard and stamp. Color, 4x6¼ overall, 4x5½ image, one surface. Russian postcard with captions on verso in Russian, English, French and German. Postmarked 1971. Russian postage stamp picturing Beregovoy affixed at lower right of photograph. Ukrainian pilot Beregovoy (1921-1995) was the pilot of the Soviet Union's Soyuz 3, launched on Oct. 26, 1968. He orbited the Earth 64 times and came within 650 feet of the unmanned Soyuz 2. The first Soyuz manned launch, on April 23, 1967, resulted in the death of cosmonaut Vladimir Komarov, who was killed when his capsule's parachute failed to open. Soviet missions ended on land, not on water as did U.S. missions. Autographs of the early Soviet cosmonauts are becoming scarce. Postcard is lightly toned and bowed. Signatures slightly smudged but legible. Show-through from printing on verso (does not touch signature). Errors in negative were reproduced in photo. Lightly rounded and worn corners. Light impressions on image (not visible head-on). Overall, fine condition.
