Typed letter signed: "Gordon M. Graham" in black ink as Lt. General USAF. 7x8½. April 25, 1972. To "Dear Mr. Stanhope" in full: "I am pleased to send you the photograph you requested [not included]. I noted your address of Arvada - I was born in Ouray, Colorado and it is good to hear from someone in that area. Best wishes". Lt. General Gordon M. Graham (1918-2008) was U.S. Air Force officer. He began his military career in December 1940 as an aviation cadet and received his pilot wings in August 1941. He commanded three different fighting squadrons during World War II. By the end of the war, General Graham had flown 73 combat missions in P-51 Mustang fighter aircraft and had become a triple ace with 16½ enemy airplanes to his credit. He was appointed commander, U.S. Forces, Japan and was awarded the Order of the Sacred Treasure, First Class, by Japan, and the Order of National Security Merit Gug-Seon Medal by the Republic of Korea. His last assignment before retiring in 1973 was as commander of the Sixth Allied Tactical Air Force in Izmir, Turkey, responsible for NATO air forces from the United States, Greece and Turkey. Corners slightly rounded. Pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
