JAMES G. HARBORD. TLS: "J.G. Harbord", 1p, 7¼x10½. New York, 1941 December 22. To Mr. A.A. Wallgren, Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania. Sending "Wally" Wallgren thanks for his Christmas card "A Yule Yolly from Florence and Wally", reciprocating "with our best wishes to you both for a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year...." After fighting in the Spanish-American War and serving in the Philippines as Assistant Commander of the Philippine Constabulary (1903-1914), JAMES G. HARBORD was appointed Chief of Staff of the American Expeditionary Force under General John J. Pershing in May 1917. In May 1918, he took command of the 4th Marine Brigade attached to General Omar N. Bradley's 2nd Infantry Division and led it at the Battle of Belleau Wood (June 6-25, 1918). Harbord was President (1923-1930) and later Chairman of the Board (1930-1947) of RCA. Private ABIAN A. "WALLY" WALLGREN worked as a cartoonist for the "Philadelphia Public Ledger" and "Washington Post" before WWI. He served in France with the Fifth Marines of the First Division. Wallgren's cartoons appeared in every issue of the U.S. military newspaper "The Stars and Stripes", poking fun at army life, satirizing the absurdity of army regulations and highlighting the differences between the army brass and the frontline soldier. Lightly creased and soiled. Fine condition.
