GENERAL JAMES M. GAVIN
James M. Gavin signed this letter, typed on his personalized stationery in 1968, to tell the recipient that "I will do everything possible to turn this country around and to bring about a change of administration in Washington." Matted to 17¼x13¾ in a grey matte with a photo of Gavin in uniform. Gavin, "The Jumping General", parachuted into Sicily, Normandy and the Netherlands with the 82nd Airborne Division.
Typed letter signed "James Gavin". 1 page, 7¼x8¾ (visible), on Gavin's personalized stationery. Matted to 17¼x13¾ in a grey matte with a 6¼x7 (visible) photo of Gavin. March 11, 1968. Addressed by Ms. Marion Clark Lauritsen, Lynn Massachusetts. In full: "Dear Ms. Lauritsen: Thank you for your recent letter and kind thought. I do not know what will develop in the current political situation, but I will do everything possible to turn this country around and to bring about a change of administration in Washington. Your expression of support is very mush appreciated. Sincerely, James M. Gavin". As an officer with the 82nd Airborne Division during World War II, Gavin (1907-1990) parachuted with his troops during battles in Sicily, Normandy and the Netherlands, becoming known as "The Jumping General". After retiring from the Army, Gavin twice served as President Kennedy's Ambassador to France. After a 1967 visit to Vietnam, he urged negotiations to end the Vietnam War "by any means available". Lightly toned, foxed and creased. Folded twice vertically and horizontally and unfolded. Horizontal folds are lightly discolored. Tape along edges of matte. Back of matte is gouged and has paper loss (not visible head-on). Otherwise in fine condition.
