JAMES M. GAVIN
James M. Gavin sends a typed letter suggesting that the recipient
calls his secretary to set up an appointment but he may not be able to
accommodate her.
Typed Letter Signed: "Jim Gavin", 1p, 7¼x10½. Cambridge,
Massachusetts, 1969 March 11. To Miss Caroline Bird, The Presidents
Association, Inc., New York, New York. In full: "Thank you very much
for your letter of 7 March. I appreciate your interest in the volume of
communications that come to my office. I will be happy to talk to you about it
when circumstances will permit. As you suggest in your letter, if you will call
my secretary, she will try to make an appointment for you. I hasten to add,
however, that I am on a terribly busy schedule with a great of business travel
both in the U.S. and abroad. In addition to this, we anticipate making a public
offering of our stock this spring and this has added to the burden of
administrative work in my office. It, therefore, may be a bit difficult to
obtain the time that you would like. Sincerely," As an officer with the
82nd Airborne Division during WWII, James M. Gavin (1907-1990) parachuted
with his troops during battles in Sicily, Normandy and the Netherlands, becoming
known as "The Jumping General". After retiring from the Army, Gavin twice
served as President Kennedy's Ambassador to France. After a 1967 visit to
Vietnam, he urged negotiations to end the war "by any means available". Fold
crease not near signature. Fine condition.
