James M. Gavin sends a typed letter answering questions and recommending some books to read.
Typed Letter Signed: "Good Luck/Jim Gavin", 1p, 7¼x10½. Osterville, Massachusetts, 1984 July 25. To Miss June Siracusa, Baldwin, New York. In full: "Thank you for your recent letter. You asked several questions: 1. I would like to know what you felt being a general in the war. I was pleased to serve my country in the war. 2. How it felt when the war finally ended? Great. 3. I would like to know how you felt about President Roosevelt. I thought that he was one of our great presidents. He provided extraordinary leadership in one of the most critical periods of our national history. To get the complete answers to your questions, I suggest you read some of my books. The last one published is ON TO BERLIN, published by Viking Press in 1978. An earlier one is WAR AND PEACE IN THE SPACE AGE, published by Harper Brothers in 1958; another is CRISIS NOW published by Random House in 1968. Sincerely," As an officer with the 82nd Airborne Division during WWII, James M. Gavin (1907-1990) parachuted with his troops during battles in Sicily, Normandy and the Netherlands, becoming known as "The Jumping General". After retiring from the Army, Gavin twice served as President Kennedy's Ambassador to France. After a 1967 visit to Vietnam, he urged negotiations to end the war "by any means available". Correction fluid at 1 word. Slightly creased. Fine condition.
