JAMES M. GAVIN
James M. Gavin sends a typed letter suggesting where to obtain an 82nd shoulder patch or stars.
Typed Letter Signed: "Jim Gavin", 1p, 6½x8½. Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1958 September. To Mr. Kenny Lazier, Soquel, California. In full: "Thank you for your letter of 29 August. I am glad that you have received the autographed picture. I do not have any 82nd shoulder patches and I am not sure where any stars that I may have now are, since they are now in storage. It may be possible for you to obtain both from Fort Bragg, the home of the 82nd Airborne Division. I would suggest writing directly to the Post Exchange and they may be able to help you. Thank you for your letter. Sincerely," As an officer with the 82nd Airborne Division during WWII, James M. Gavin (1907-1990) parachuted with his troops during battles in Sicily, Normandy and the Netherlands, becoming known as "The Jumping General". After retiring from the Army, Gavin twice served as President Kennedy's Ambassador to France. After a 1967 visit to Vietnam, he urged negotiations to end the war "by any means available". Fold crease not near signature. Lightly creased at corners. Fine condition.
