Typed letter signed: "J H Hay" in black felt. 8x10½. San
Francisco, December 3, 1967, typed on letterhead of the Office of the Commanding
General to "Dear Mr. Alford", in full: "I received your letter of 6
November requesting my autographed picture and am only too happy to send this to
you. I feel very honored that it is to be in the company of such great men. I
hope your collection will be of great interest to your children and wish you all
of the best in the future. Sincerely". Major General John H. Hay
(b. 1917) served with the 10th Mountain Division in Italy in World War II,
and in 1947 was attached to the Swiss Army Mountain troops. He served as a Battle
Group Commander and later as Chief of Staff of the 101st Airborne Division at
Ft. Campbell, Ky., until 1961. Hay was assigned to Vietnam in 1967 and became
Commanding General of the 1st Infantry Division. He commanded the defense of
Saigon in II Field Force during May 1968 offensive and organized and commanded
the Capital Military Assistance Command until his departure in August, 1968.
General Hay later commanded the XVIII Airborne Corps from March 1971
until May 1973, when he retired from the Army. Toned. Corners rounded. Lightly
creased along bottom margin. Some darkening along top edge. Otherwise, fine
condition.
