Signing as Chief of Staff, the General writes a letter to an
associate, stating that the letter will be presented by a Lieutenant "under
confidential relations from his own Government". The recipient, Captain William
A. Burnside, is not to be confused with Ambrose Burnside
Typed letter signed: "Leonard Wood", 1 page, 5¾x9. November
24, 1913. Washington, D.C. In full: "Dear Captain Burnside: This
letter will be presented to you by Lieut. Colonel Moreton F. Gage, Military
Attache at the British Embassy, this City. Colonel Gage is visiting Mexico under
confidential instructions from his own Government, and he is particularly
anxious to place himself in close and friendly relations with you, in view of
any possible contingencies. I shall be very glad if you will extend to him all
possible courtesies. He will explain to you more in detail the purpose of his
visit, and also his intentions in case of certain eventualities. Very
sincerely". During the Spanish-American War, Leonard Wood (1860-1927)
was Colonel of the 1st Volunteer Cavalry (Roosevelt's Rough Riders),
leading it in the Cuban operations at Las Guasimas and San Juan Hill in June
1898. He served as Military Governor of Cuba from 1898-1902. Promoted to
Brigadier General in February 1901 and Major General in August
1903, Wood was transferred to the Philippines, where he served as Governor of
Moro Province, 1903-1906. He commanded the Philippines Division from
1906-1908. Binding holes on left margin. Heavily toned. Left edge heavily worn.
Corners worn and creased. Surface creases. Multiple folds. Right edge creases.
Stale holes in left and top margin. Lightly soiled. Pencil note (unknown
hand).
