Commemorative Envelope signed: "L E Brown/LT GEN USMC" in black ink, 6½x3½, commemorating the 75th Anniversary of Powered Flight, postmarked Madison, Wisconsin, November 4, 1978, 15-cent U.S. stamp affixed. Marine Corps Lieutenant General Leslie E. Brown (1920-1997) was born in Washington State. After enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1940, he served in the 2d Marine Division in the Pacific during World War II. A graduate of flight training, he served in Korea and Vietnam and was the first Marine to fly a jet into combat in Korea. During Vietnam, Brown served as First Wing Operations Officer and commanded a jet attack group at Chu Lai base camp. Later assignments include Secretary to the General Staff, Logistics Operations Officer for the Fleet Marine Force in the Pacific, Chief of Staff at U.S. Marine Corps Headquarters and Commanding General of the Fleet Marine Force in the Pacific. His awards include two Purple Hearts, two Silver Star Medal awards, the VFW Grand Cross of Malta and the Distinguished Flying Cross. Fine condition.
