ISRAEL'S MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE SENDS GREETINGS FROM AFRICA TO HIS
DEPARTMENT
MOSHE DAYAN. ALS: "Naaman and Moshe" on verso of postcard.
Color, 6x4¼. Front depicts a young African girl. Two Cameroun stamps affixed,
postmarked Douala, date illegible, but dated by Dyan at upper
margin: "September 27, 1963". Written in Hebrew to the Ministry of
Agriculture, Hakiryah, Tel Aviv, Israel. Translated, in full: "Shalom How
are we doing? (Naaman, I and the gang). In order to get stuck in Cameroon, in
Douala on the Lions Day - you have to know how to plan it, but in that we are
experts! We already did Togo. Everyone is taking good care of us, showing us
respect, etc. and everyone eats and drinks and talks with no end. Regards to
everyone." At the time he wrote this letter, Dayan was Israel's Minister of
Agriculture (1959-1964). Moshe Dayan (1915-1981) founded the Haganah
militia force in 1939. While leading a Jewish company against the Vichy
French in Syria, he lost his left eye and thereafter wore a black patch. After
serving in the British Army during WWII, Dayan fought in Israel's first war
after independence in 1948. Israeli Chief of Staff (1953-1958), Dayan
is credited with the Israeli Army's success in Gaza and the Sinai in the 1956
Suez War. As Minister of Defense, he planned and commanded the Six
Day War (1967). General Dayan, who resigned after a disagreement over the
1973 Yom Kippur War, later served as Foreign Minister (1977-1979).
Lightly creased at corners, light vertical crease touches some writing. Lightly
soiled, paper clip rust mark at lower left margin (not at writing). Overall,
fine condition.
