MOSHE DAYAN
As Minister of Agriculture, he writes to Prime Minister Levi Eshkol about a constitutional issue (1963).
TLS: "MD" in Hebrew as Minister of Agriculture, 1 page, 6½x8¼. Jerusalem, 1963 July 11. On State of Israel letterhead to the Prime Minister (Levi Eshkol). Translated, in full: "At that time I replied, according to your idea, to the request of the leader of the coalition about this matter - even though it appeared starnge in my eyes, as I did not think that the coalition can discuss executive matters that were already decided by the government. Now I received this [enclosed] letter and I ask for your guidance in the matter. With blessing". A carbon copy was sent to the Minister of Treasury. Written the month after Levi Eshkol, who had previously been Minister of Finance, replaced David Ben-Gurion, who had served as Prime Minister since 1955 (Ben-Gurion stepped down in June, citing "personal matters"). Moshe Dayan (1915-1981) founded the Haganah militia force in 1939. While leading a Jewish company against the Vichy French in Syria, he lost his left eye and thereafter wore a black patch. After serving in the British Army during WWII, Dayan fought in Israel's first war after independence in 1948. Israeli Chief of Staff (1953-1958), Dayan is credited with the Israeli Army's success in Gaza and the Sinai in the 1956 Suez War. As Minister of Defense, he planned and commanded the Six Day War (1967). General Dayan resigned after a disagreement over the 1973 Yom Kippur War, but he later served as Foreign Minister (1977-1979). Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. Ink notes (unknown hand) at upper portion and at lower right corner. Staple holes at upper right corner, two file holes at blank right margin. Overall, fine condition.
