Moshe Dayan signed this typed letter in 1974, after being dropped from the cabinet of Israeli prime minister Yitzhak Rabin.
Typed letter signed "M. Dayan". 1 page, 8¼x10½, on paper imprinted with the emblem of Israel. Zahala, Israel, October 14, 1974. To Mr. Julius Klein, Chicago, Illinois. In full: "Thank you for your letter of September 27, 1974. Sincerely yours, Moshe Dayan" Dayan (1915-1981, born on Kibbutz Degania Alef, Palestine, now in Israel) joined the Haganah militia force and was imprisoned by the British for his involvement with them from 1939 to 1941. After serving in the British Army during World War II, he fought in Israel's first war after independence in 1948, losing his left eye. As Israeli Chief of Staff (1953-1958), Dayan is credited with the Israeli Army's success in Gaza and the Sinai in the 1956 Suez War. As Minister of Defense (1967-1974), he planned and commanded the Six-Day War (1967). Dayan's star waned somewhat in Israel after 1973's Yom Kippur War, blamed for Israel's lack of preparedness. He was dropped from the Israeli cabinet after Yitzak Rabin became prime minister in June of 1974, but returned as Foreign Minister under Menachim Begin from 1977 to 1979, instrumental in the signing of the Camp David Accords.
