Nelson A. Miles sends an autograph letter trying to set up a convenient time to meet in New York.
Autograph Letter Signed: "Nelson A. Miles", 1½p, 5x8. Washington, D.C., 1904 March 13. To Mr. Long. In full: "Refering (sic) to my note of last evening, If convenient I would like to meet you Friday or Saturday in New York at the Waldorf-Astoria any hour most agreeable." Miles, custodian of Confederate President Jefferson Davis at Fortress Monroe after the Civil War (1865-1866), fought Indians on the frontier (1869-1880), leading successful campaigns against the Apache, Sioux and Nez Percé tribes. In 1886, he captured Geronimo. During the Spanish-American War, General Miles occupied Puerto Rico. Nail head-size brown stains touch some text but not signature. Creased. Lightly soiled and worn. 1-inch separation at right horizontal fold touches 1 word (all intact). Lightly shaded. Tape remnants at left blank margin of front page.
