NELSON A. MILES
About taxes on his 400 acres near Indio, California.
TLS: "Nelson A. Miles", 1p, 4¾x8. Headquarters of the Army, Washington, 1899 June 10. To the Treasurer of San Diego County, San Diego, California. In full: "Please send me statement of the amount of taxes due on my land near Indio, being W. 1/2, of S.E. 1/4, and west half of section 29 in township 5, south of range 8, E. San Bernardino; 400 acres, more or less." During the Civil War, Nelson A. Miles distinguished himself at Antietam, Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville and was made Brigadier General (1864) and Major General (1865) of Volunteers. Remaining in the Army as a Colonel, he helped subjugate the Sioux in Montana and in 1877 destroyed the village of Chief Crazy Horse. In the same year he defeated and captured Chief Joseph of the Nez Percé. In 1886, as Commander of the Department of Arizona, he accepted the surrender of the Apache under Geronimo, and in 1890-1891, in Dakota, he suppressed another Sioux outbreak. On July 25, 1898, during the Spanish-American War, he landed in Puerto Rico, occupying the island until August 13th when Spain surrendered. Eight months later, General Miles wrote this letter. Lightly creased. Tackhead-size stain at lower right blank corner. Overall, fine condition.
