Autograph Document Signed: "W. Scott" (twice), 2p, front and verso, 8x9. Headquarters, 1815 March 23. Memo noting that "Major Barker will make an order in the usual form approving the sentence of the general court martial of which Lieut. Col. Clemson is President in the case of Capt. Robert Patterson of the 32nd regt U.S. infantry, but remitting so much of the said sentence as respects the pay of Capt. Patterson. Approve also, the proceedings in the case of Capt. Wm G. Oliver 42nd U.S. Infy (tried before the same court)...." On verso, Scott has penned: "made thereon/Head Qrs/March 23rd 1815/W Scott" with "P.S./The proceedings above referred to accompany this memorandum. W. Scott". Beneath Scott's signature are eight lines referring to his approval of the two sentences. General in the War of 1812 and in the Mexican War, General Scott captured Vera Cruz, defeated the Mexicans at Cerro Gordo, Contreras, Churubusco, Molino del Rey and Chapultepec and occupied Mexico City. In 1852, Scott was the Whig candidate for President, losing to Democrat Franklin Pierce. Lightly creased. Folds, not at signature.
