Prejudice' Music Box/Studio - Lucille Watson", 6x4½. Dated (unknown hand):
"Nov. 8 - 35". Canadian actress Lucile Watson (1879-1962) performed on
Broadway for over 50 years, beginning with Hearts Aflame (1902) and
concluding with Late Love (1953-1954). When she signed this sheet, she
was appearing there as Mrs. Bennett in a stage adaptation of Jane Austen's
Pride and Prejudice, and she quotes from it here. Even as a young
beauty, Watson was said to have a stern look. This visage became familiar to
movie audiences when, after the death of her husband, playwright Louis Shipman,
in 1934, she brought her talents to Hollywood. She played a long series of
strong older women in films like The Razor's Edge (1946) and Little
Women (1949), and she received an Oscar nomination as a Washington matriarch
in Watch on the Rhine (1943). Vertical fold crease at center passing
through "L" of signature. Three (3) binding holes at left edge.
