LUCIUS BENTINCK (10th VISCOUNT FALKLAND) CARY
The 10th Viscount Falkland pens this letter of introduction to a friend in Bombay, asking him to welcome a new arrival and to extend him as good advice to a new arrival, in iron gall ink
Autograph Letter signed: "Falkland" in iron gall ink. 2 pages (front and verso). 4½x7. 53 Eaton Place: London. Date: July 15, 1855. In full: "My Dear Lumsden: Mr. Gustavus Coulson, a young civilian on the Bombay establishment will be the bearer of this and you will oblige me very much if you will extend such notice to him and give him the good advice you extended a governor, much more to a Tyro just entering on an Indian Career. My Sally sends kind regards and I am every your sincere friend. Falkland". Lucius Bentinck Cary, the 10th Viscount Falkland (1803-1884) was a British colonial administrator and Liberal politician. He was born to Charles John Cary, 9th Viscount Falkland, and his wife Christiana; he succeeded as tenth Viscount Falkland in 1809 when his father was killed in a duel. Lucius was a Scottish reformer and was elected to the House of Lords as a Scottish representative peer in 1831. However, already on May 15, 1832 he was created Baron Hunsdon, of Scutterskelfe in the County of York, in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. This title gave him a seat in the House of Lords and five years later was admitted to the Privy Council. He became Governor of Nova Scotia in 1840 after the recall of Sir Colin Campbell and opposed the movement led by Joseph Howe for responsible government leading to Howe threatening to horsewhip him. He restructured the colony's Executive Council by including reformers in the body which had previously been a Tory domain but resisted the demand that the majority part in the legislature be permitted to form a government; when his term ended in 1846 he returned to England and held office in the Whig government of Lord John Russell as Captain of the Yeomen of the Guard from 1846 to 1848. The latter year he was appointed Governor of Bombay and remained there until 1853, when he returned to England to later served as a magistrate in Yorkshire. He married Lady Amelia FitzClarence, who was the last unmarried illegitimate daughter of King William IV and his mistress, Dorothy Jordan, on December 27, 1830 at the Royal Pavilion. The King gave away the bride and the ceremony was performed by the Bishop of Winchester; they spent their honeymoon at Cumberland Lodge and had one son, Lucius William Charles Frederick Cary, Master of Fakland, and who married Sarah Christiana Keighly, but died childless. As his only son had predeceased him he was succeeded in his titles by his younger brother Admiral Plantagenet Peirrepont Cary. "My Sally" must have been Lord Falkland's affectionate term for his wife, Viscountess Ameila, the daughter of King William IV by his mistress Dorothea Jordan. Normal mailing folds. Worn at left and bottom edge. Lightly creased and toned. Light foxing. Otherwise, fine condition.
