[STANLEY BALDWIN]; LUCY BALDWIN
Writing to Sir Robert Lynn from 10 Downing Street during the General
Strike of 1926, she praises her husband's undaunted spirit.
Autograph Letter signed: "Lucy Baldwin", 1 page, 5¼x7. 10
Downing Street [Prime Minister's residence, London], 1926 May 7. To
"Dear Sir Robert" [Lynn], in full: "Thank you so much for your
most kind letter. It is most cheering to me to feel what affectionate & true
friends he has. If anyone worked for Peace, he did, & as he has all his
life, his spirit is undaunted, thank God! But I don't want another fortnight
like the one we have just been through! I expect that you had a pretty bad
journey from Belfast, but I hope that the sea was kind. Yours sincerely".
LUCY BALDWIN (1869-1945) married Conservative Party politician
Stanley Baldwin (1867-1947) in 1892. He would serve three terms as Prime
Minister between 1923 and 1937, forced to deal with the abdication of King
Edward VIII, the rearmament of Germany, and the General Strike of 1926, underway
when this letter was written. Lucy Baldwin, politically canny herself, was
involved in charitable causes, most notably a long-term effort to improve
maternity care and reduce mortality during childbirth. Lady Baldwin became
the Countess of Bewdlen in 1937. The recipient of this letter was Sir Robert
Lynn, an Ulster Unionist Member of Parliament and hence a political ally of
the Prime Minister. Normal mailing folds. Lightly toned at left edge. Otherwise,
fine condition.
