LUDOVIC HALEVY
The French author and playwright known for his parodies signs this handwritten letter dated 1894
Autograph letter signed: "Ludovic Halevy" in black ink. 4½x3½ card. Thursday, November 8, 1894. On letterhead of the Haute Maison in Sucy-en-Brie, France. In French, unable to decipher at this time. Ludovic Halévy (1834-1908) was a French author and playwright. He was connected early with the Parisian stage through his uncle, Fromental Halévy, a noted opera composer. His name appeared for the first time on the bills on 1 January 1856. Soon afterwards, the unprecedented run of "Orphée aux enfers", a musical parody, written in collaboration with Hector Crémieux, made his name famous. In the spring of 1860, he teamed up with Henri Meilhac forming a partnership that would span 20 years. Their joint works may be divided into three classes: the operettas, the farces, the comedies. Amongst the most celebrated works of the joint authors were "La belle Hélène" (1864), "Barbe-bleue" (1866), "La Grande-Duchesse de Gérolstein" (1867), "La Périchole" (1868), and "Le Réveillon", which became one of the sources of Johann Strauss's operetta Die Fledermaus. Of Halevy's novels, some of the best received were Monsieur et Madame Cardinal (1873), Les Petites Cardinal and L'Abbé Constantin (1882). He was elected to the Academie Francais in 1884. Lightly toned. Slight crease in bottom right corner. Faint pencil erasure on top left corner. Otherwise, fine condition.
