LUIGI ALVA
The famed tenor endorses a $590.89 check from the Metropolitan Opera Association, in blue ink
Paycheck endorsed: "Luigi Alva" in blue ink. 6x3½. New York, N.Y. January 4, 1965. Check #6315, drawn on the account of the Metropolitan Opera Association, Inc., at the Chase Manhattan Bank, payable to Alva for $590.89. Luigi Alva, born in Paita, Peru in1927, is a retired tenor who is very well known as the "King of Light Tenors" from the 1950s and 1960s. He and Graziella Sciutti had established themselves as stars of light operas from the 1700s and 1800s after singing Cimarosa's Il Matrimonio Segreto at the opening of La Piccola Scala theatre in 1955. Alva was one of the most exquisite interpreters of Mozart and Rossini as well as some Donizetti, Bellini and Verdi. Some of his best-known roles are Count Almaviava in Rossini's Barber of Seville and Fenton in Verdi's Falstaff. The Metropolitan Opera Association was formed as a non-profit education foundation in 1932, to enable the Met, which had been losing money, to avoid entertainment taxes. Lightly toned at edges. Bank processing stamps on face and verso. Signature lightly beaded but legible. Otherwise, fine condition.
