Paycheck Endorsed: "Luigi Alva" in black ink. 6x3½. New York, N.Y. January 27, 1965. Check #23429, drawn on the account of the Metropolitan Opera Association, Inc., at the Bank of New York, payable to Alva for $1,507.50. The check carries a second (illegible) endorsement. Luigi Alva (b.1927) is a retired tenor who is very well known as the "King of Light Tenors" from the 1950s and 1960s. He and Graziella Sciutti had established themselves as stars of light operas from the 1700s and 1800s after singing Cimarosa's Il Matrimonio Segreto at the opening of La Piccola Scala theatre in 1955. Alva was one of the most exquisite interpreters of Mozart and Rossini as well as some Donizetti, Bellini and Verdi. Some of his best-known roles are Count Almaviava in Rossini's Barber of Seville and Fenton in Verdi's Falstaff. Multiple creases. Lightly toned. Corners worn. Bank processing stamps on face and verso (lightly effecting signature). Otherwise, fine condition.
