LUIS FERRÉ
8½x11 photo signed as Governor of Puerto Rico
Photograph signed: "Luis Ferré/1969" as Governor. B/w, 8½x11. Accompanied by forwarding letter from the Office of the Governor, dated 1969 September 22. Luis Alberto Ferré (1904-2000) became wealthy running the industrial firm founded by his father. In 1968, Ferré was elected Governor of Puerto Rico, the first elected on a platform advocating statehood for the island. (Previous governors had favored commonwealth status.) He served only one term (1969-1973), but the New Progressive Party he led went on to further victories. Ferré was also a major patron of the arts, founding a major museum in his native town of Ponce. Ferré is one of only four Puerto Ricans, a second being his sister Isolina, to receive the US Presidential Medal of Freedom. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
