LUIS ARROYO Signed 10x8 photo, shown in Yankee uniform delivering a pitch Photograph Signed: "Luis Arroyo". B/w, 10x8 overall, image 9½x6¾ (one surface). Arroyo (1927-2016) had only one outstanding Major League season, but that season was a legendary one. After a competent debut in 1955 as a St. Louis Cardinals starter, Arroyo spent five seasons in the Pirate and Yankee bullpens before coming into his own in the great Yankee season of 1961. Throwing his screwball as the Yankees bullpen ace that season, he won 15 games while losing only five, with an earned run average of 2.19 (1½ runs per game below the league average). He led the American League that year in games pitched, games finished (54), and games saved (29), a very high number in an era when the concept of the "closer" was only starting to emerge). He made his second All-Star team that year, and won another game in the World Series. The 1961 Yankees, considered one of the greatest teams of all time, won 109 games and a World Championship, as sluggers Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris chased Ruth's season home run record. Arroyo was a key ingredient of that team. Regrettably, Arroyo injured his arm the next spring and spent only two more seasons in the Majors. He was the first Puerto Rican to play for the Yankees. Fine condition.
