Printed Card signed in ink: "Luke E. Wright", 4¾x3½ Card imprinted: "Washington, D. C." Luke Edward Wright (1846-1922) joined the Confederate army as a private at age 15, later cited for bravery and promoted to lieutenant. As a young Memphis lawyer, he took charge of the relief efforts during the Yellow Fever epidemic of 1878-1880, despite being himself afflicted with the disease. He was Attorney General of Tennessee before serving the US as Governor General of the Philippines (1904-1906), Ambassador to Japan (1906-1907) and Secretary of War (1908-1909). He succeeded William Howard Taft, who would soon succeed Roosevelt as President, in both the Philippine and War Department posts. Wright was the only Confederate veteran to become US Secretary of War. Corners lightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
