LUKE P. POLAND
He signs an autograph letter discussing his service in Congress, and also signs an autograph sentiment on verso.
Autograph Letter signed twice: "Luke P. Poland", 1 page, 5x8 folded (10x8 flat) ruled paper, affixed to 5½x8½ sheet of yellow paper. St. Johnsbury, Vermont, 1873 May 9. To "Dear Sir", in full: "I served in the Senate of the United States during the 39th Congress, to fill the place of Hon. Jacob Collamer, who died during his term, and since the 39th Congress I have been in the House. Most truly yours". Also signed on verso: "I am truly/your most obt. Servant/Luke P. Poland". Luke Potter Poland (1815-1887) was a Justice of the Vermont Supreme Court from 1848 to 1865, the last five as Chief Justice. As he notes above, he was appointed to fill an unexpired term in the US Senate (1865-1867) before being elected four consecutive terms in the House. He was the sponsor of the Poland Act of 1873, which reorganized the federal justice system in Utah to facilitate prosecution of bigamists. Republican Poland would be defeated for re-election in 1874, but would return to Congress for one more term (1883-1885). Poland was President of the First National Bank of St. Johnsbury for 20 years.
