Book Cover signed: "Lulu Belle", "Scotty", 7x10½. Front cover only of their songbook, Mountain Melodies (Chicago, Illinois, 1947). In 1932, Myrtle Cooper (1913-1999) joined the radio cast of National Barn Dance, a program which rivaled the Grand Ole Opry in the 1930s and 1940s and attracted nearly 20 million regular listeners. She took the stage name of Lulu Belle. The next year, "Skyland Scotty" Wiseman joined the show. Lulu Belle and Scotty married in 1934, and for the next three decades were a leading duo in country and bluegrass music. Scotty, who played guitar and banjo, was also an accomplished songwriter. His songs "Mountain Dew" and "Have I Told You Lately That I Love You" are standards of the genre, the latter also covered by several pop musicians. Lulu Belle, the more dynamic stage presence, could also play the comic, as in her novelty song "Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavor on the Bedpost Overnight?" The Wiseman's retired from live performance in 1958, but made three more studio albums together. Lulu Belle entered politics, serving in the North Carolina legislature. Worn.
