Autograph Letter signed: "Lyman Abbott", 1p, 4¾x8. No place, 1888 June 16. In full: "My
dear Mr. Richwood- Have I thanked you for the splendid portrait of Mr. Beecher. I hope so; but I
am suspicious of myself. If not, I hope Better late than never applies- Yours Sincerely"
Congregationalist minister Abbott (1835-1922) succeeded Henry Ward Beecher as editor of
The Christian Union, later renamed The Outlook, heading it for 46 years until his death.
Identified with the "social gospel" of liberal Christianity, Abbott championed the
progressive reforms of President Theodore Roosevelt. He was expelled from the American
Peace Society in 1913 for advocating military preparedness. Jagged at left edge. Fold creases
through signature. Creased at lower right corner. Otherwise, fine condition.
