Signed autograph letter declining an invitation to give a sermon.
Autograph Letter Signed: "Lyman Abbott", 2 pages, 4½x7, separate
sheets. "The Knoll", Cornwall-on-Hudson, New York, 1901 September 24. In
full: "Your favor of 17th Sept. I find awaiting me on my arrival at home.
I remember with pleasure my services at the Union Church of Worcester [?]
and wish I might repeat there, but engagements already made practically fill all
my Sabbaths for the rest of the year. So I am compelled to decline your kind
invitation. Yours sincerely". Congregationalist minister Abbott (1835-1922)
succeeded Henry Ward Beecher as editor of The Christian Union, later
renamed The Outlook, heading it for 46 years until his death.
Identified with the "social gospel" of liberal Christianity, Abbott
championed the progressive reforms of President Theodore Roosevelt. He was
expelled from the American Peace Society in 1913 for advocating military
preparedness. Lightly soiled. Glue stains on verso of second sheet show through
to both pages.
