Signature: "Yours Sincerely/Lyman Abbott", 1 page, 5x7½. On letterhead
of "The Outlook/287 Fourth Avenue/New York". Congregationalist minister Abbott
(1835-1922) succeeded Henry Ward Beecher as editor of The Christian
Union, later renamed The Outlook, heading it for 46 years until his
death. Identified with the "social gospel" of liberal Christianity, Abbott
championed the progressive reforms of President Theodore Roosevelt. He was
expelled from the American Peace Society in 1913 for advocating military
preparedness. Lightly creased. Soiled at upper margin. Overall, fine
condition.
