Application signed: "Lyman G. Bloomingdale", in brown ink, 1 page, 8½x14. October 24, 1896, New York City, New York. Application to the Lafayette Post of the Grand Army of the Republic including his personal history, claiming his "occupation as a merchant," and stating, "I served during the late rebellion as follows: I enlisted on the 9 day of Oct 1864, as 1st Sgt in Co. A First Regiment Kansas S. M.". In 1872, American businessman Lyman G. Bloomindale (1841-1905) founded Bloomingdales Department Store with his brother Joseph on 56th street New York City. Now on 59th street Manhattan, Bloomingdales became popular for its exclusive Parisian fashions. Joseph Bloomingdale retired in 1896, however Lyman continued with the business until his death in 1905. His son Samuel J. Bloomingdale took over the store and expanded it the world known company it is today. The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) was a fraternal organization for veterans of the Union Army, US Navy, Marines and Revenue Cutter Service who served in the American Civil War. Folds. Creased and toned. Edges and corners slightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
