LYMAN SPITZER, JR.
The physicist who first conceived of putting telescopes in space, and has one named after him, declines to sign First Day Covers with which he has no association.
Autograph Note signed: "Lyman Spitzer, Jr", 1 page, 8½x11. Princeton, New Jersey, circa 1991. Below a typed letter dated May 14, 1991, requesting his signature on two First Day Covers, Spitzer replies in full: "I have not signed either of the two envelopes you sent me since I have no idea what they are about. Neither my wife nor I are Jewish, and have had no contact with the nation of Israel. Sorry I cannot be of some help to you. Sincerely yours". Lyman Spitzer, Jr. (1914-1997) was an American theoretical physicist and astronomer, researching star formation and plasma physics. In 1947, at age 33, he became Director of the Princeton University Observatory. In 1946, Spitzer was the first to propose putting telescopes in space, where images would be unhindered by the Earth's atmosphere. NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, an infrared space observatory launched into a trailing orbit in 2003 is named for him. Spitzer was also founding director of what is now called the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory. A skilled mountaineer, Spitzer was the first to scale Mount Thor, on Baffin Island, Canada. The American Alpine Club gives annual awards in his name. Corners lightly worn and creased. Normal mailing folds. Surface creases. Slightly toned. Tear on right edge. Large crease on left margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
