LYNN FONTANNE
Typed Letter signed: "Lynn Fontanne", 1 page, 5¾x7¾. Ten Chimneys,
Genesee Depot, Wisconsin, 1972 April 6. On personal letterhead to William
Stanhope, Arvada, Colorado. In full: "Unfortunately, we have no
photographs available at the moment, but I shall enclose an autographed card for
you. [not included] Thank you so very much for your nice letter and the
kind wishes you relay. Sincerely". English born actress Lynn Fontanne
(1892-1983) was a Broadway star for nearly 50 years, beginning in 1910. She was
married to her frequent co-star, American Alfred Lunt, from 1922 until his death
in 1977. Although the Lunts scored Oscar nominations for the film version of
their Broadway performance in The Guardsmen (1931), they generally
shunned films in favor of live theater. The were co-recipients of the
Presidential Medal of Freedom (1964) and Lifetime Achievement Tony awards
(1970). In 1980, Lynne Fontanne accepted Kennedy Center honors on behalf of
the "First Couple of the Theatre". Ten Chimneys, a complex of buildings
built over two decades on land purchased by Alfred Lunt in 1914, was the
couple's lifelong home, where they entertained many literary and entertainment
luminaries. It is now a museum open to the public and housing a large collection
of documents and memorabilia. Fine condition.
