Playbill for a production of Ma Rainey's Black Bottom at the Cort Theatre in New York. An actor with an inspiring story, Charles S. Dutton (b. 1951) started life off rough, being sent to prison at the age of 17 after the death of a man Dutton was said to have fought in self-defense. In prison, Dutton had a stint in solitary confinement, where he passed the time by reading an anthology of black playwrights. He became passionate for acting and drama, and upon his release, enrolled as a drama major at Towson State University. His Broadway debut was in the play Ma Rainey's Black Bottom (1984), a role which earned him a Theatre World Award and a Tony nomination for best actor. His short career on Broadway made a big impact, and he went on to work in film and screen, having his own television series, Roc (1991), and co-starring in Alien 3 (1992). Dutton worked as a director for the mini-series The Corner (2000), with the mini-series winning several Emmys. SCOTT DAVENPORT-RICHARDS was an actor appearing in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. LEONARD JACKSON (b. 1928) is an actor of stage and film, known for his PBS television appearances, and acting in the cinema classic The Color Purple (1985). Before he became known for his screen work, Jackson acted on the stage, appearing in four plays: Murderous Angels (1971), Lost In The Stars (1972), Ma Rainey's Black Bottom (1984), and Mule Bone (1991). Actor ROBERT JUDD has appeared in two plays and two credited roles in films. He appeared in Watch On The Rhine (1980) and two productions of Ma Rainey's Black Bottom; once in 1984, and again in 2003. The most known film he appeared in was the drama mystery Crossroads (1986), where he appears as the character Scratch. THERESA MERRIT (1924-1998) is best known for starring in the short lived comedy That's My Mama (1974) as the title character. Merrit began her acting career on Broadway, appearing in 13 plays throughout the years. She was the title character of Ma Rainey in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom (1984), and after her death in 1998, a 2003 production of the play was dedicated to her. Whoopi Goldberg played the character of Ma Rainey in Merrit's memory. ALETA MITCHELL is an actress of stage and film, her best known role in the 1984 play Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. She has appeared in 11 screen and film titles, though they are mostly minor roles. Of the television roles, she has acted in shows such as The Cosby Show (1985), Law and Order (1991), and Law and Order: Criminal Intent (2002). JOE SENECA (1919-1996) has appeared in stage and film roles, but is most remembered for his roles in iconic African American films such as Crossroads (1986) and Malcom X (1992).
