MABEL HACKNEY
On black-bordered mourning paper, the actress (who died in Canada's most lethal peacetime maritime accident) thanks club owner Luther Munday on behalf of her husband Laurence Irving
Autograph Letter signed: "Mabel Hackney", 1 page, 4½x7. 10 [?] Road S W [London], no date. On black-bordered mourning paper to "Dear Mr. [Luther] Munday", in full: "Laurence asks me to thank you very much for your kind letter of sympathy. Very sincerely". Mabel Hackney (1880-1914) was a leading lady of the London stage who, in 1914, drowned with her husband, Laurence Irving, in the St Laurence River in the sinking of RMS Empress of Ireland, still Canada's most lethal peacetime maritime disaster (1,012 dead). Laurence Irving had apparently reached safety, but returned to the water seeking Mabel, who could not swim. Hackney appeared in Becket, Faust, and many Shakespearean roles. She often performed opposite famed actor Sir Henry Irving. She played Shylock's daughter to Henry Irving's Shylock in The Merchant of Venice on Broadway in 1901, with Irving's son Laurence Irving as a Venice merchant. In 1905, Hackney married Laurence Irving, better known as a playwright than as an actor. Luther Munday was a London club owner with many friends in the theatrical community. While the reason for Laurence's loss is uncertain, it may have been the death of his father, Sir Henry Irving in 1905. Lightly soiled at verso. Mounting residue at verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
