The English actress/dancer, considered one of the great stage beauties of her time, signs and dates this 3x1½ card
Signature: "Mabel Love/April 27. 38.". 3x1½ card. Mabel Love (1874-1953) was an English-born stage actress and dancer who was considered to be one of the great beauties of her time. She was born the granddaughter of ventriloquist and entertainer William Edward Love, and the daughter of actress Kate Watson. At only twelve years old, Love made her stage debut in Alice in Wonderland, which happened to be the very first stage adaptation of the story. Love continued to appear on the stage but, in 1889, Love "disappeared". She had reportedly run away considering suicide. This increased her popularity, and soon after Love became the popular subject of postcard images. Love's many appearances include Francoise in a production of La Cigale, Pepita in Little Christopher Columbus, Violet Robinson in Man and Superman (1912), and Rose Whitelands in In Another Girl's Shoes (1917). It is said that, in 1894, Winston Churchill wrote to her asking for a signed photograph. Love passed away in England at the age of seventy-eight. Bottom left corner torn. Unknown residue at face. Heavy mounting residue on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
