Singer/songwriter MAC DAVIS (born Scott Davis in 1942) was one of the most popular entertainers in the U.S. in the mid-1970s. Davis, who had his first No. 1 hit with "Baby Don't Get Hooked on Me" (1972) and also recorded "I Believe in Music", also wrote songs for Glen Campbell, Lou Rawls, Bobby Goldsboro, Kenny Rogers & the First Edition and Elvis, who recorded his "A Little Less Conversation" and "In the Ghetto". Davis, who also hosted a musical variety show on NBC from 1974-1976 and appeared on a number of specials, made his film debut in 1979's North Dallas Forty and was named one of the twelve "Most Promising New Actors of 1979" in John Willis' "Screen World". Davis, who next appeared in Cheaper to Keep Her in 1980, would later star in The Sting II (1983) and Where the Red Fern Grows (2000) and in several made-for-TV movies. Carl Hilding "DOC" SEVERINSEN (born in 1927) is best known as being the leader of The Tonight Show Orchestra for 25 years. The trumpeter, known for his flashy wardrobe and good-natured banter with host Johnny Carson, also kept up a side career, touring with smaller groups and recording on several labels. Severinsen, who had begun his professional career in 1949 as a studio musician for NBC, had moved to television in 1952 as a member of Skitch Henderson's orchestra on the Steve Allen-hosted Tonight Show. Severinsen was made assistant orchestra leader in 1962, when Carson took over as host, and was promoted to orchestra leader and musical director in 1967. During his tenure, Severinsen and his orchestra recorded The Tonight Show Band, which won the 1986 Grammy for Best Jazz Large Ensemble Recording. After the band was dismissed in 1992 by new host Jay Leno, Severinsen and some of his alumni toured the U.S. and later recorded Swingin' the Blues (1999). Severinsen signature has yellowed slightly.
