MAC McGUIRE, HOWDY GILBERT, CARL MASSEY and CHUCK SWEENEY.
Photograph inscribed and signed: "Best Regards, Elsie/Mac McGuire"
in pencil and "To Elsie/From Howdy Gilbert" in ink on verso
and signed: "Best Wishes/Carl Massey" and "Hope
you liked/our show/Chuck Sweeney" in pencil on verso. B/w with brown
hue, 5x7. Contact information imprinted at lower portion. MAC McGUIRE
(1919-1963), born Raphnel Fleming McGuire, was one of the highest paid radio
personalities in Philadelphia in the late 1940s and early 1950s. A former
soprano (as a boy) who sang cowboy ballads, McGuire performed and
toured with the Harmony Rangers, whose opening act was sometimes an
unknown group called Bill Haley and the Saddlemen (later the Comets).
McGuire and the Harmony Rangers, whose biggest hit was "Sundown Lullaby",
were heard over WIP in Philadelphia and the Mutual radio network. McGuire, who
had also been a radio disc jockey in Philadelphia and New York, later hosted a
local television variety program. The other signers were probably members of
the Harmony Rangers. Worthy of further research. Slightly soiled on verso.
Light impression of writing at upper portion of verso, touching forehead of
facial image. Overall, fine condition.
