ADELINA PATTI
Postcard photo (youthful pose) signed as Adelina Patti Cederstrom in
1916
Postcard Photograph signed: "Adelina Patti/Cederstrom/1916". B/w,
3¼x5¼. Opera singer Adelina Patti (1843-1919), a coloratura soprano,
thrilled audiences in Europe and North and South America. Born in Spain of
Italian parents - singers themselves - she grew up in the United States,
acquired French citizenship from her first husband, and lived the last 40 years
of her life in Wales. Verdi called her the greatest vocalist he had ever
heard, and others must have agreed, because she commanded $5,000 in gold
for each performance, payable in advance. After divorcing her first husband
and outliving her second, Patti married a Swedish aristocrat, Baron Rolf
Cederstrom, 23 years her junior, in 1899. They lived together at her Welsh
castle, Craig-y-Nos, until her death. Lightly worn at corners. Mounting remnants
on verso (no show-through). Otherwise, fine condition.
