MADELEINE CARROLL This original 9¾x11¾ pencil sketch of the blonde actress is signed Original Art inscribed and signed: "To John/With best wishes/& thanks for a lovely/drawing/Madeleine Carroll/1938" in pencil. Charcoal drawing, 9¾x11¾ overall, image 6¼x8½ (one surface). Carroll appeared in the film Blockade in 1938. The British actress (1906-1987), born Edith Madeleine Carroll, made her film debut in 1928 and went on to appear on the big screen until 1949. She made the transition from silent films to sound films easily, gaining notoriety for her good looks as well as her icy tone. Her credits include notable films such as The 39 Steps (1935), Lloyd's of London (1936), and The Prisoner of Zenda (1937). Carroll, who also appeared on several early TV anthologies from 1950-1955, was also known to American audiences for performing on such radio shows as The Chase and Sanborn Hour (1938). Alfred Hitchcock's masterpiece The 39 Steps catapulted the blond actress into stardom; she reportedly earned over a quarter-million dollars in 1938 alone. During WWII, she let her acting career fall to the wayside to work as a Red Cross nurse in field hospitals in Italy under an assumed name. She returned to acting in 1947 and even made her stage debut on Broadway in 1948, but never reached her previous success. Lightly creased and soiled. 1x½-inch circular cut at mid-right margin, chipped at upper right edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
