MADGE KENDAL
She writes about putting part of Shakespeare's "As You Like It" to song.
Autograph Note signed: "Madge Kendal", 4¾x3 postcard postmarked Brighton, date illegible, 1897 To Gerald Christy, London, in full: "'What shall he have that killed the deer?' is a glee always. It is 'under the gleement tree' - but it can be sung as a solo. [?] is in the same book. Chappells! But it is not essential". Madge Kendal (1848-1935) born in Great Gimsby, England, married actor William (Grimston) Kendal (1843-1917), who took her name, in 1869, and the couple starred in stage performances from Shakespeare to the "fairy comedies" of W. S. Gilbert, touring the US for the first time in 1889. The Kendal's, who helped restore respectability to the London theatre after a period of disrepute, retired in 1908. Outliving her husband by nearly two decades, she became a Dame Grand Cross of the British Empire in 1927. Here she has quoted a line from Shakespeare's As You Like It, suggesting that it be sung as a glee (three part harmony) or solo. Soiled. Corners lightly worn and creased. Lightly toned. Ink stamps. Otherwise, fine condition.
